Haven't been on in a while, so I hope this covers it...
Attended Vehicle Identity Check test, passed with no problems. £38 to have someone tell you your car isn't stolen. Wonderful. Also found out we couldn't get a tax book unless we could contact the previous owner, but his/her details were private. Bit of a Catch 22.
Found holes, welded them, checked the brakes, electrics, etc, crossed fingers and headed for the MOT centre. Failed SPECTACULARLY! Several minor things we half expected and were easy to fix, but there's nothing quite like a brake pipe exploding on the rolling brake test machine to wind up the nice test centre people. We were banned from driving the car home with a prohibition order on which the tester accidentally included the previous keeper's details! All was sorted and retested within 3 days and we went and had a nice chat with the previous owner, so we now have an MOT and a Tax Book. Sorted!

Next up, a quick service. Our VIC test is running a little late so we need to have the car tip-top prior to the VIC so it'll already be MOT ready because time is getting short. And we haven't even begun the important task of scarring the car. Anyway...on with the service. There's more than a little hole in the history so apart from the usual bits we'll do the pesky timing belt.

Injecting a little life into the big girl!

We think the cooling problem is fixed, but just when it seemed the car was ready we noticed a trail of diesel following it everywhere it went! Once the injector was out we discovered we had every size of copper washer but the one we needed, so we went old skool and annealed it with a blowtorch. So far, so good!

A little prep and a little paint, looking slightly more civilised. Not looking quite scally enough yet, but we thought it best to have the car look like it deserves an MOT before we attempt to get one.

Back in black. And red.

New bits on, some Scally style bodging and some inspired late night vandalism. Should probably start looking at the mechanicals soon. Now that the our Scally Wagon looks like a car again, we need to get it going and stopping. And get those warning lights on the dash to stop blinking.

With the bumper off we soon realised we needed a few bits and pieces to give the next bumper somewhere to bolt on to. And to make the headlights and indicators fit. And to make the bonnet close. With a lot of hammering, pulling with chains, 'correcting' with a sliding hammer and jamming a bottle jack into some awkward crevices, we were able to refit the bumper brackets

only to find our new bumper needed as much correction as the car!

Hammertime

We stopped in a scrapyard on the way home where we had set aside a bumper, headlights and bonnet. Before we took the car off the trailer we stripped off the most badly damaged parts and swapped the bonnets to keep the engine dry. The next morning the car looked worse than when we bought it...

The Journey Home

The journey home didn't start well with the nice salvage people insisting on putting our car on our trailer with a forklift. We'll check the exhaust later!

We knew the rules. £100 was our top limit, we wanted the mighty Rover and had accepted that our consolation prize might be a very sorry looking Escort or a worse Fabia. Our brave and fearless Captain stepped up to the plate.

One of our team has attempted a similar trip across Europe in an '86 MR2, which unfortunately put a 'leg out of bed' on the Autobahn. He says we'll finish it this time.
